Enjoyable Vacations In Loch Ness

Scotland is a superb country to spend a few days, or a longer vacation. It is enormously popular with mountain climbers, hikers, hill-walkers, ramblers and other folk of that type. The vast majority folk enjoy the mixed and captivating countryside which has an excellent amount of sites to visit including some rather famous,  and spectacular, areas of outstanding beauty. One such place which is, more than likely the most famous is Loch Ness and the famous Loch Ness Monster. In the following article I take a look at this most interesting Loch Ness as place to take a vacation.

Enormously deep and atmospheric, Loch Ness is a enormous stretch of water found in the awesome Highlands of Scotland pretty close to the city of Inverness (see below for more info). Surrounded by the most graceful countryside, which has enigmatic areas of forest, huge heather clad mountains, the loch is much more well known for being the home of the Loch Ness Monster affectionately known as Nessie.

The monster of Loch Ness make her first appearance in history in the autobiography of Saint Columba. It is said that the respected saint forced a monster back into the waters after the beast had been creating havoc with one of his monks.

During the third decade of the twentieth century a road was built which ran along the banks of Loch Ness. Within a few years in nineteen thirty four reports relating to sightings of an enormous aquatic monster began to feature in the press.

Inverness, widely referred to as being the capital of the Scottish Highlands, was ceremoniously granted city status in the year two thousand and one and at the moment is the only city to be found in the Scottish Highlands. Uniquely (in the UK) the city has no legal boundaries which creates problems with population statistics. The problem is made worse by the fact that the population of the city is increasing, the city has the highest growth rate for any city in the UK. One fact we know for certain is that the population of Inverness is fairly happy, in 2008 Inverness was placed fifth in a survey taken, by the Telegraph, of 189 UK cities for quality of life. So I think we can safely state that Inverness is a pretty cool city in which to spend time and this is most probably one of the factors which make Inverness immensely popular with tourists. Importantly there is a large number of Inverness hotel and guesthouse accommodation with the majority of it being able to be booked online.

An important fact to remember is that the nearest airport to Inverness is, roughly, 7 miles to the east at Dalcross. It is possible hail a cab to the small and busy airport which is quite reasonable. If you need maps of Inverness then you will find them free at the tourist office, in the center of town. While you are enjoying your Inverness vacation you should make a mental note to visit Inverness Castle, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, the Mercat Cross and ‘stone of tubs’ especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an enjoyable interactive experience.

If you are interested in taking a vacation in Scotland based in Loch Ness and Inverness then you will discover Inverness bed and breakfast online by using the search term “Inverness hotel accommodation” or “Inverness bed and breakfast” into your favorite search engine (the quotation marks/inverted commas can help greatly).
