NEWTON, MA–(Marketwire – October 28, 2010) –  Andover Newton Theological School (www.ants.edu/) will host old-time bluegrass fiddler Dick Solberg (www.sunmountainfiddler.com/) to its Stoddard Hall Performance Series (www.ants.edu/stoddardhall) on Friday, November 19, at 8:00 pm.

Born in New York City, Solberg was trained classically on piano and violin, but earned acclaim “fiddling” in styles like old-timey, bluegrass, Celtic, and Cajun. His professional career started in 1976, as a street-fiddler in Ann Arbor, Michigan; Provincetown, Cape Cod; and Coconut Grove, Florida. Solberg has since performed in the Caribbean (25 winter seasons in St. Thomas), the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, the Great Wall of China, and the American University in Cairo. 

Solberg, whose Norwegian name means “sun mountain,” has been entertaining for almost thirty years, playing every imaginable venue public radio and television concerts to waterfront bars burials at sea to a birthday party for six ladies over 100 years old. The Fiddler lives in an old wooden Grange Hall in central New York State, and is currently working on a musical about Norwegian immigrants on the Erie Canal in 1826, the year the canal opened.

Solberg’s performance is presented in Stoddard Hall at 230 Herrick Road in Newton Centre on Friday, November 19 at 8:00 pm. Tickets are available in advance for $15 at the Box Office (www.ants.edu/stoddardhall) (210 Herrick Road Newton Centre) or online at ants.tix.com or for $18 at the door.

Andover Newton Theological School has trained spiritual leaders on their Herrick Road campus since 1825. Teaching in the reformed tradition (www.ants.edu/ants-difference/about/), Andover Newton is a theologically progressive school which has been convenanted with the Congregational Church (now United Church of Christ) since 1807 and with American Baptist Churches USA since 1825. The campus is adjacent to Hebrew College & Rabbinical School and the two schools co-sponsor the Center for Interreligious and Communal Leadership Education (CIRCLE.) Andover Newton entered into a partnership agreement with Meadville Lombard Theological School (Chicago, IL) — a Unitarian Universalist seminary — in June 2010. The student body of just over 300 encompasses 35 different faith traditions and Christian denominations.

The Stoddard Hall Performance series is a secular series designed to bring live folk music to this Boston suburb while creating campus employment for Andover Newton students.
